Melanotaenia trifasciata, Banded Rainbowfish comes from northern Australia.  They are more frequently found in both alkaline water (PH 7.2 - 8.0) and more acidic water (PH 6.5-6.9).  There are many coloration patterns for this species-- more than 26 discovered to date!  For a look at other color patterns,  see this web page.  This fish encounters quite variable water temperatures in its natural habitat -- anywhere from 75 to 91 degrees Fahrenheit depending on the season.  Banded rainbowfish are undemanding to keep; they willl eat anything offered to them, including brine shrimp, dried food, and blood worms.  They are peaceful and very suitable for community and heavily planted tanks.
