Hemigrammus
Erythozonus, or Glowlight Tetra, also known in some references as
Hemigrammus Gracilis. This well known and popular community and
planted tank fish is colorful, yet in my experience, rather shy and many times
hidden from view. In my tank, this may in part be due to the fact that I
kept these fish with Angel fish, and Angel fish as they mature harass smaller
fish like the Glowlight Tetra. This fish originates from the Guianns and
adjacent regions of the Amazon, in shady jungle rivulets and swamps. They
will grow to be 1.5 to 2 inches in length, though usually in captivity they do
not achieve a full 2 inches. Their body shape and demeanor are similar to
those of the Cardinal Tetra. Their coloration is striking, with a
shimmering gold stripe passing through their otherwise nearly transparent
body. They prefer soft, slightly acid water, will eat flake food, brine shrimp
and blood worms, and will thrive in water temperatures between 75 and 82 degrees
Fahrenheit.
